Reverend Philip "Skip" Dunford
Born 27 September, 1945, in Kimball West Virginia, Skip is the son of retired Presbyterian Minister, Dr. Phil Dunford. His mother, Ginny, met Phil when both were serving as US Marines. When his father was sent to the South China Sea via a Navy ship (whose informal title is “Skipper”), he wrote letters home asking, “How’s the little Skipper?” Born a boy child, the name “Skip” stuck.
His dad was called to the ministry while still in service. By the time Skip was in 3rd grade, he had already lived in 5 towns in four states. They moved twice more before Skip left home for college.- finally to Leesburg, FL, which he claims as his “hometown.”
Skip graduated with a BA degree from Centre College in 1967. While there he met and fell in love with Lucy James from Franklin, KY. They were married in 1966.
Skip enlisted in the US Navy in 1967, and was commissioned in 1968. He served as Supply Officer on board USS Monticello, an amphibious assault vessel. Monticello steamed just over 100,000 miles during that time, much of it in combat operations in Vietnam, where they were engaged in two major landing operations and several river assaults.
After military service, Skip was involved in a number of unrelated occupations, ranging from government employment in Kentucky, operating retail and wholesale businesses in Colorado, and teaching in public school and community college settings in North Carolina, before finally entering seminary. His various occupations he considers “preparation for ministry”! He received his MDiv from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1992.
Skip was ordained in July,1992. Prior to accepting the call to Elizabethtown he served churches in Dallas, NC, and Mount Horeb, a rural church in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
Skip and Lucy have two sons, Nathan, who is production manager for a specialty gourmet food company in Maine; and Jason, who teaches school in Swain County, NC. They have three grandchildren.
