Ministries:
One amazing aspect of First Presbyterian Church is its small group ministries and warm congregation. Below is a list of some of our groups. You don't have to be a member to visit our groups. Just come for the fun!
Adult
No Name Gamers
The No-Name Gamers gather most Friday evenings for a time of purely social activities as a Christian family. We participate in table games of different kinds as the group feels moved. The preferred game currently is a variety of dominoes called "Chicken Foot" or "Chicken Track." It can be played by as many as 10 people at the same table. The game commonly requires one hand of participating to be at the experienced level and two hands to be at the expert level of play. We are, also, providing basic teaching in how to play Bridge and are currently recruiting Bridge players to assist in teaching others to play the game. The groups always has a great time and the camaraderie is enjoyed by all.
Game time is usually about 7:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall of the church and runs until about 9:00 PM but is somewhat flexible. The evenings occasionally include a gathering prior to the game time at about 6:00 PM for dinner at a location that the group agrees upon. The dining time is simply a gathering of those persons who wish to do so and is not specifically for the game group. Anyone who would like to join in that part of our evenings is certainly welcome. The group is currently attended by church members but, also, friends or family of our church members. Ages range commonly from the middle twenties to the over 60 group, but has also included children who are about 10 years old who already play table games with their families. There is no age restriction, but services to take care of or supervise children are not available. We would encourage younger groups who would like to join in the time for games to come and share our space and time.
Gatherings are very informal and late comers are always welcome. The gatherings always include snacks and drinks brought and shared by the participants. In the true Presbyterian tradition there is always a lot more than can be consumed on any given group night. We would encourage anyone interested to join us. If you have questions please contact Laverne Walton, Jo Meyers, or Tom Arney during other activities at the church or call them at home. Their numbers are in the church directory. Occasionally we have to move out of the fellowship hall or must cancel, so if you are a first time attendee, please check with one of the regulars to be sure we are meeting.
Young Families
We have a vibrant, young family ministry. Our informal family ministry complements our strong, programmed family activities. In April 2007, First Pres opened its new recreational facilities. There is a preschool area with age appropriate playground and playhouses. We have a commercial grade playground for ages 5-12. Additionally, we have soccer, basketball, and volleyball for kids of all ages. These facilities offer a safe-place for kids to play and foster fellowship between the kids and their parents.
Senior
"VIPs"
The VIP’s are a group that likes to go out to lunch and have a good time talking with friends. The VIP’s was formerly known as the “Senior” ministry. Although most are “retired”, there are several that are not; hence, the new name. In addition to fellowship after Worship and at Bread For the Journey, the VIP’s take a monthly trip on the church bus to restaurant in a nearby community. The VIP’s often visit a local attraction on these trips. Past trips include a visit to Lincoln’s Birthplace in Hodgenville or a trip to the Bernheim Forest for a picnic lunch. Contact Janet Bradley to get in on the fun!
Intergenerational Bread for the Journey
This is a mid-week meal and program. After we have dined together, varied offerings will be available. We hope to plan study of Christian and Presbyterian Heritage, mission opportunities, children’s activities, youth group and more. This event began in 2005 and we are learning and expanding as we walk the journey.
Presbyterian Women
Presbyterian Women is part the national women’s organization of the Presbyterian Church. With a history of more than 200 years, PW is committed to nurturing faith, supporting the church’s mission, working for justice and building community. The Presbyterian Women also sponsor the annual Fall Festival with proceeds going to fund a major church project.
Men's Group
Not to be left behind by the women, a group of the church's men meet on the first Saturday or the month for breakfast at the church. There they enjoy fellowship with other men and make guy-talk. Like the women, the men focus on helping the church. The men often support the property ministry and sponsor the annual Christmas dinner. Contact Alan Winkenhofer at (270) 737-6295 for details.
